Honorable Robert M. Ball

Robert M. Ball began a distinguished career in the Social Security Administration after obtaining an MA in economics from Wesleyan University. After starting as a field assistant in 1939, he spent nine years as deputy director of the Bureau of Old Age Insurance. He then rose to become commissioner of Social Security, a position he held under three presidents until his retirement in 1973. Since then, he has served on a number of advisory boards and committees, including the Social Security Administration Advisory Council. His accomplishments have earned him considerable recognition, including his induction in 1999 into the Health Care Hall of Fame.
