Hon. Mark Hatfield

(1922 - )

Mark Hatfield has been a scholar and practitioner of American politics for nearly his entire life. He began his political career while he was a professor and dean of students at Willamette University. After serving four terms in the Oregon Legislature, he became secretary of state and then governor. He won election to the U.S. Senate as a critic of the Vietnam War. On the national level, he focused on improving health, education, and social service programs. Since retiring from the Senate, he has taught college and served on numerous boards and commissions, including the Lasker Foundation, Mercy Corps, and the Oregon Health Sciences Foundation.
