Honorable Joseph A. Califano, Jr.
Joseph A. Califano is currently chairman of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. After graduating from Harvard Law School, he held several posts in the federal government, including deputy secretary to the U.S. secretary of defense and senior domestic policy aide to President Lyndon Johnson. During his four years serving Johnson, he earned a reputation as "the deputy president for domestic affairs." In January 1977, newly elected President Jimmy Carter appointed him U.S. secretary of health, education, and welfare, a position he held until 1979. During that time he focused on projects dealing with abortion and Medicaid funding.
