Hon. Carol Moseley-Braun

(1947 - )

Moseley-Braun made history in 1992 when she was elected to the U.S. Senate, becoming the first black woman to do so. A Chicago native and life-long resident, she earned a law degree from the University of Chicago, became an assistant U.S. attorney, and won a seat to the Illinois House of Representatives. After winning election to the U.S. Senate, she championed educational reform, spoke out for universal health coverage, and supported preventive health strategies. In 1999, President Bill Clinton appointed her ambassador to New Zealand. Since returning home in 2003, she has practiced law, taught college, launched an organic food company, and campaigned for President in 2004.
